Five HVAC Considerations for Pet Owners

Posted on Jul 1, 2019

Are you looking to replace or install an HVAC unit in your home? If so, there are plenty of factors to consider including size and location of the unit, care and maintenance, and more. But you should also be considering one other important thing when thinking of HVAC – your pets!

HVAC Considerations Are Important for Pets Too!

As a pet owner, there are five HVAC factors to consider. These will ensure that you and your animals are living in a healthy and clean environment while also maintaining an HVAC system properly.

Replace the filter often

First and foremost – make an effort to replace the air filter often. The filter in your HVAC system is designed to remove pollutants and air spores that could be harmful to your health. These include mold spores, cold and flu germs, and more.

HVAC filter replacement should be done at least every 2-3 months, more so if there are many pets and people living in the home. Doing this will help keep the air clean and fresh, for you and your four-legged friends. It will also make sure your system is running properly, extending its lifespan.

Vacuum regularly

Another way to consider your pets is by vacuuming regularly. You may not think this has much to do with HVAC but it does. Vacuuming removes hair, dirt, and other materials from the floors and improves indoor air quality. It also keeps debris from entering the air ducts.

This, in turn, keeps those particles from clogging up your air filter and causing allergies for all household residents. In other words, you’ll be extending the life of your air filter by vacuuming often.

Protect the unit

Another great factor to consider is protecting the unit itself. Some pets are very adventurous and investigative. They may find the HVAC system in your basement or on the side of your house intrusive and decide to do something about it. Scratching, clawing, and biting are all common issues that arise for pet owners with HVAC systems.

Therefore, it is a good idea to protect your unit. Set up a fence or some type of perimeter around it and make sure that your pets are steering clear. This keeps everyone safe, and to be honest – it also adds a bit of curb appeal. HVAC units can be unattractive.

Adjust the temperature

When considering your pets and HVAC system, you should be thinking about the temperature in your home. Not only are lower temps great for your HVAC system (they keep energy costs down and the system from overworking) but your pets also appreciate it.

Think about it – they’re most likely covered in fur. Lower temps, even if by 4-5 degrees, can help keep them feeling comfortable in their home.

Consider a purifier

Lastly, you might want to consider an air purifier in your home. Vacuuming and cleaning the air filter will help immensely, but if you or your pets suffer from severe allergies, then you may need more. Thus, an air purifier may be the solution. This should help continue to cycle pollutants out of the air and keep you feeling great. Your pets will also thank you for the cleaner air!
