Do you have questions about cleaning your HVAC system? There’s a lot of information floating around, so we want to set the record straight on some of the most common myths.

HVAC Cleaning Myths

MYTH #1

It’s only necessary if you see dirt in the ducts.

FALSE

Regardless of whether your HVAC duct is visibly dusty or not, you should have you duct work cleaned regularly. Over time, dust and debris build up, and can block airflow, cause illness, or intensify allergies or breathing issues.

MYTH #2

It’s only necessary if you use air conditioning units.

FALSE

While air conditioning units might spread dust and debris if not properly maintained, HVAC units will naturally collect airborne pollutants, mold or pet hair. Regular cleaning helps alleviate this issue.

MYTH #3

Bacteria won’t grow if you use a dehumidifier.

FALSE

In Hawaii and other places, mold and bacteria growth are common problems due to humidity. However, a dehumidifier, while useful, does not stop the bacteria from growing. A regular cleaning is the best way to combat unhealthy mold or bacteria growths.

MYTH #4

If cleaning is done wrong, it can lead to more air quality issues.

TRUE

If a service provider incorrectly cleans an HVAC unit, it can lead to poorer air quality. This is why it is important to choose a cleaning service that follows industry regulations and keeps up with certifications.
